Back in March 2020, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced that the country’s telecommunications providers will offer 1GB of internet a day for free effective 1 April 2020 as part of the Short-Term Economic Recovery Plan (ERP). This initiative was intended to lend a helping hand to those who need internet at home to work and study during the MCO lockdown period. However, the data utilisation period was limited to between 8am and 6pm.
This offer has since been maintained over the months into the ongoing RMCO period, and now in a welcome move, it has been extended to the end of the year. What’s more, the time limit has been removed as well, so the 1GB is available for use anytime during the 24 hours of a day!
[Note: Refer to your respective provider for when they are commencing the 24-hour offer.]
Local internet players, namely Celcom, Digi, Maxis, U Mobile, and Telekom Malaysia’s Unifi Mobile have collectively showed their support for the extension of the daily free 1GB Productivity Internet offer. In a joint statement, these providers said, “All active postpaid and prepaid customers of the operators will be able to enjoy the daily 1GB of free internet for learning and productivity tools as well as for most browsing needs, except for social media, video streaming, gaming and music streaming. The daily free 1GB internet provided is over and above customers’ monthly data allocation from their existing plans, which means customers can redeem up to 30GB data per month for free.”
Aside from the daily 1GB internet offer, users are also given free and unlimited access to official COVID-19-related apps, websites and hotlines, including the MySejahtera and MyTrace apps, pertinent health websites such as the ones of the Ministry of Health Malaysia and World Health Organization, and hotlines such as the CPRC Hotline.
Users are advised to get in touch with their respective internet providers to procure further details on the daily free 1GB Productivity Internet offer, including how to redeem it and which plans are covered, as well as to browse the latest postpaid and prepaid offerings made available over the last few months.
