Tucked away behind entertainment hub TREC on the fringes of the Selangor Golf Club, 10 Warung is a new food market/hall set in a green sanctuary. Pan-Asian delicacies are the name of the game here and as the name suggests, it will soon be home to 10 different vendors offering a range of cuisines.
It’s early days yet for this city oasis that’s situated at Zebra Square, the pandemic having hampered its launch, but 10 Warung already exudes a lush vibe and is a great spot to chow down on some super tasty food while calming the nerves. Few places in KL offer the kind of greenhouse-style setting you get here, with plants, vines and herbs of all sorts covering the roofs and walls.
Art and food go hand in hand here and alongside the culinary spread, 10 Warung is also home to a gallery/cafe and a hydroponic outfit that has sustainability and up-cycling at its heart.
What’s On The Menu?
Even though 10 Warung currently only has a handful of food stands occupied, there’s a diverse spread on offer that will make taste buds sing. Open from 7am-8pm, it’s good for breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner, and ideally suited for families.
Purveyor of fine smoked salmon and trout, Figo Deli is flush with mouth-watering cuts of these premium fish, available in platters, sandwiches or pastas. Sourced from the North Atlantic, each fish is lovingly smoked and cured by the owner himself and prepared on site.
Hot smoked and honey glazed, cold smoked pastrami, Cajun spiced and maple-cured, Figo Deli knows how to bring out the most nuanced of flavours in salmon and trout.
If noodles are your thing, make a beeline for Cha Cha Nui – makers of traditional homemade pan mee. Everything is made fresh on site, including of course the flour-based, chewy but soft, perfectly al dente noodles that the Hakka dish is defined by. Eaten dry or in a beautifully complex broth, with added chilli or not, they are some of the most slurp-worthy strands this side of KL.
Equally as favourable are other options like curry laksa, prawn mee, popcorn chicken and mee hoon soup. We recommend going for the hand-stretched pan mee though, a delight from start to finish.
Another Hakka delight is available at Warung Puteh, where you’ll find yong tau foo treats. Primarily tofu cubes stuffed with a range of fish pastes and minced meats then braised or deep-fried, you can have these with a range of delicious sauces and soups.
Meanwhile, rich aromatic scents drift from the Skinny Chef, which has mastered the intricate flavours of Indian and Pakistani foods. Indulge in curries, dhals, tandoori-cooked cuts and plenty more at this tasty stand.
For dessert or a cuppa, head on over to Kacak Kafe & Gallery for premium baked goods and a cup of nitro cold-brewed coffee. The spread here includes everything from organic sourdough banana bread and almond cake to apple pie and chocolate chip cookies.
If you want to cool down a bit, head into the gallery where you can grab a seat and enjoy vibrant artwork courtesy of Kacak Designs. Pair your cake or bread with a frosty coffee and let the stresses of the day melt away.
Keep It Green
Beyond food, 10 Warung is home to an outfit dubbed Soilless, which is helping lead the charge in hydroponic, sustainable farming. If you’re looking to try your hand at growing stuff without soil, these guys can set you in the right direction with custom made contraption or ‘prototypes’.
Currently there’s only one available with a few more in production. Crafted from an upcycled paint bucket, the set up includes an 18w pump, pebbles, rope and jute loop, as well as seeds, sponges and nutrients. You can see these towers at various spots on site and they look great once the greens have fully grown.
Entertainment wise, there’s also a variety of live music happening on a weekly basis in Kacak Gallery and outside. You can here musicians playing both covers and originals, adding their sonorous vibes to the site. Moving forward, there will be an ever growing number of artists stepping up to showcase their sounds so make sure to keep an eye on the line up.
10 Warung is on track to become a thriving hub that crowds will flock to once the entire site has been fully developed. Stay tuned for more food options, art installations and exciting events coming in the near future!
