If you grew up with Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Green Arrow, Batman, Wolverine or any of the thousands of characters that exist across comic book universes, or if you’ve been caught up in the wave of Marvel films currently ruling the silver screen, then you’ll want to block the 16 and 17 of this month as one of Southeast Asia’s largest events in the Animation, Comics and Games (ACG) culture touches down – Comic Fiesta 2017.
This year marks the event’s 16th year and in that time it has grown by leaps and bounds, starting as a small fair in 2002, barely attended by a few hundred visitors, to a massive multi-pronged festival that returns this month to the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre were up to 50,000 fans are expected to throng the halls.
Billed as an event by fans, for fans, Comic Fiesta is volunteer-fuelled and non-profit – the good folks behind it are doing it for one reason only: for the love of comics and to bring the comic convention experience to Malaysian fans. And it’s an experience packed with attractions, performances, competitions and much more.
Hit the Creative Art Market where you can go all out buying and trading fan-made merchandise at hundreds of booths manned by artists and fans; check out talks, panels and live demo sessions by specially-invited guests and experts in the industry; meet-and-greet the creative minds and score some autographs; and spectate (or take part) in national cosplay and comic competitions.
Headlining act for the weekend is Japanese rock/metal superband Earthbound Papas, fronted by the legendary Uematsu Nobuo, the creator of the Final Fantasy themes and scores. Each member is a renowned video game composer and together they’ve been rocking out conventions around the world since 2010. Prepare to hear amped-up versions of your favourite game music by the Papas.
With that said, the two-day fiesta is set to be one of the year’s most talked about events, offering a visual and aural feast next-to-none. Meanwhile, get your costumes ready, your graphic novels primed and your pens on standby.
