On the turf at Dataran Merdeka or Independence/Merdeka Square, a marble plaque marks the spot where the Union Jack was lowered at midnight on August 30, 1957, and the Malaysian flag hoisted for the first time - marking the birth of a nation. The flagpole is the tallest in the world. Live entertainment and cultural shows are staged at the amphitheatre on festive occasions. The Royal Selangor Club and St Mary’s Cathedral are but two famous landmarks that can be found nearby.
ISTANA NEGARA (C5)
The official residence of DYMM Yang Di-Pertuan Agong (The King). The palace is surrounded by green lawns, ponds and trees. On ceremonial occasions, the palace and its grounds are brightly lit-up.

This Islamic influenced, Moorish-style terminal with its graceful arches and minarets was built in 1910 and underwent extensive renovations in 1986. The station was the nerve centre of Malaysian railways before its operation was relocated to KL Sentral.

The tallest tower in Southeast Asia and currently, the fourth tallest structure in the world, stands at an amazing 421 metres at the pinnacle of Bukit Nanas. PARLIAMENT HOUSE (B3)
On elevated ground commanding a panoramic view of the Lake Gardens is the modern Parliament House. The main building and its adjoining tower block accommodate the two houses of Parliament, a banquet hall, library, various offices and committee rooms. Visitors may view Parliamentary sessions by prior arrangement with the authorities.

At a height of 1,453 feet, one of the world’s tallest twin buildings rises above the skyline of Kuala Lumpur. The telekom museum is a neo-classical Greek-styled build in 1928. It acts as a storehouse for various telecommunications equipment dating way back to pre-war years. There is also a set of the first telephone used in the country.
MILLENNIUM MONUMENT
The first national monument to be built in Putrajaya. It is uniquely shaped like an obelisk with etchings denoting important periods and milestones in the nation’s history. The monument is 68m tall. It stands in a 25 hectare park in Precinct 2. The monument is constructed of solid metal structures. At night, the monument serves as a beacon with strong light projected at 360 degrees and sweeping lights visible from various locations in Putrajaya.

One of the world’s largest free-standing bronze sculptures commemorates servicemen who have sacrificed their lives during the struggle against the communist insurgency in the 1950s. There are five principal components that comprise the memorial site: the monument itself; a long rectangular reflecting pool with fountain; a crescent-shaped pavilion; the cenotaph; and the ancillary gardens. The monument depicts a group of soldiers holding the Malaysian national flag, the Jalur Gemilang, aloft. Each of the bronze figures symbolises leadership, suffering, unity, vigilance, strength, courage and sacrifice. Every year on July 31, Hari Pahlawan (Heroes Day), the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the Prime Minister and heads of military and the police would pay their respects to the fallen heroes by laying garlands at the monument.

The National Mosque is a uniquely designed building that embodies a contemporary expression of traditional Islamic art. The main dome has the character of a multi fold “semi-opened blue umbrella” which symbolises the five pillars of Islam and the states of Malaysia. The 73 m tall minaret has the shape of a “closed blue umbrella”. Visitors are advised to adhere to the dress code when visiting.

The temple was built by Thambusamy Pillai in 1873 and was initially used as a private shrine by the Pillai family. The temple was opened to the public in the late 1920s and is the oldest functioning Indian temple in Malaysia. This temple resembles the form of a human body lying on its back with the head positioned towards the West and the feet towards the East.

The Thean Hou Temple is one of the largest Chinese temples in South-East Asia. The forest reserve is located within the same area as KL Tower and is also known as the “Forest within the city”. It covers an area of approximately 11 hectares and is the only remaining tropical forest in the heart of the city. Visitors have a chance to see a rich variety of flora within the forest. There are nature trails you can walk in this forest reserve. An Information Centre at the reserve helps you understand more about forestry.
BATU CAVES
The Batu Caves consist of three main limestone caves and a number of smaller ones and measured at 400 meters long and 100 meters high. The grand caves are the Dark Cave, the Museum Cave and the Temple Cave. A climb up its 272 steep steps will take you to the Temple Cave where devotees gather during the Hindu festival of Thaipusam.
