Global Music At SoundBridge Festival

SoundBridge Festival 2017 is a music festival that presents new compositions from local, Southeast Asian and international artistes. This year, the festival brings 60 illustrative artists and musicians for a multisensorial experience of contemporary music.

The first concert of the event Concert I – Connecting Cities II will feature nine compositions by composers from Germany, China, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and Malaysia. One of the compositions that audiences will hear is Yuan-Liu composed by the Festival’s Artistic Director, Professor Chong Kee Yong – a piece written with transcendental sounds of the Chinese sheng. The Festival is also proud to welcome Taiwanese sheng player Shen Ling Hxuan, piano duo Xie Ya Ou and Xie Yashuangzi from China, Japanese percussionist Kamiya Hiromi and many more renowned musicians from the region.

The first day also brings a flute solo recital by Daiske Kino-Shita from Japan. Open to the public, the one-hour lecture recital on five works, including the latest composition Farbe I, will be accompanied by Daiske’s explanations of the various playing techniques that are involved in performing them.

On day two, a free panel discussion on the Trend of Cross-Media in Contemporary Music will take place, which will explore ways to promote cross-media collaboration with contemporary music.

That same night, seven Southeast Asian composers will each be paired up with a mid-career artist of a different craft to create a stunning mix of contemporary music and traditional music, dance, modern dance, visual arts, painting, improvisation and live electronics for Concert II – SoundBridge II.

Finally, the festival concludes with a concert that focuses on works written by Malaysian composers and performed by Malaysian musicians such as the UiTM Percussion Ensemble lead by Max Riefer, Young Choral Academy Chorus, and the MIA Ladies Chorus.
