Le French Festival Is Back!

17 films, four live shows, two major art exhibitions and various gastronomic events are just some of the happenings at the 16th Le French Festival!

Francophonic fanaticism is one again spreading across the country as Le French Festival returns for its 16th edition. From 4 May-17 June, the culturally curious can explore the joi de vivre of the Parisians and the Marseillais as the Klang Valley becomes awash with performances, film screenings and more.

Le Film
When it comes to cinema, no one does it quite like the French. Oftentimes gritty, offbeat and poignant, movie-goers will be able to experience the true breadth and sophistication of French filmography with a series of motion pictures featured at cinemas across the Klang Valley, including Mid Valley Megamall, 1 Utama and Pavilion KL.

They range from the slightly absurd like La Vache – the story of a man who realises his lifelong dream when he receives an invite to bring his cow to the Paris International Agriculture Fair – to the biographical, as is the case with Chocolat and L’Odyssée, which both deal with famous figures in French history. All movies will be screened from 4-21 May in French, with English subtitles.

La Musique
Then, for those who appreciate music that moves the soul, esteemed pianist Maxime Zecchini will be flying down on 31 May, to play with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO), followed up by the Fête de la Musique on 17 June, an-all day musical affair to be held at The Square, Publika.

La Danse
Another highly anticipated part of the Festival are the dance performances and this year’s line-up is sure to delight. The Uzumaki Dance Company are up first with a show that mixes elements of Japanese dance theatre butō, hip hop and origami. Then, things take a turn for the bizarre with The Afternoon of a Foehn, where audiences will witness a whimsical choreography of puppets using plastic bags.

On the art front, there will be two major art exhibitions taking place. First, be transported back in time at Gaumont: 120 Years of Cinema, which details the rise of the very first film company in the world. Then, pay a visit to the Whitebox at Publika to learn more about French architect and urban planner Jacques Ferrier, whose most notable work will be displayed in a unique box system with scenography.

La Gastronomie
On top of this, presenting sponsor Martell will be presenting a set of cooking classes and cognac tastings that are sure to elevate your next dinner party. So what are you waiting for? Check out the Le French Festival website for the full schedule and bon voyage!
