SEA Games KL2017: Equestrian Endurance – The Royal Rider

Equestrian events comprise dressage, show jumping and endurance; each of these disciplines is well represented by members of the national squad this year, who together with their mounts will be doing their best to secure a chunk of the seven gold medals on offer.

The Sporty King
Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin ibni Almarhum Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah
Equestrian – Endurance
Born: 22 January 1962
Ranked among the top national equestrian athletes by the International Federation for Equestrian Sports, Sultan of Terengganu Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin is the only royal entry in this year’s contingent. He has competed in many of the world’s most prestigious endurance competitions and will be looking to step up this year after having to pull out of the 2006 Doha SEA Games due to a pressing royal ceremony back home – his coronation as King.

His keen interest and involvement in the sport has helped it develop rapidly in the region. The Terengganu International Endurance Park (TIEP), where the KL2017 Equestrian sports will take place, is also the site of an international equestrian academy. When the riders race on the grounds of TIEP a day after the opening ceremony of the Games, the crowd may see the first champion Sultan.
