A force to be reckoned with, the Malaysian equestrian team is packed with some of the region’s finest riders who will be reining in the competition as they gallop for gold.
Equestrian events comprise dressage, show jumping and endurance; each of these disciplines is well represented by members of the national squad this year, who together with their mounts will be doing their best to secure a chunk of the seven gold medals on offer.
Line Of The Ball
When Khairy Jamaluddin qualified for the KL2017 Polo squad, he became the first cabinet member to represent his country as a professional athlete. As one of the seven members of the team, the 40-year-old Youth and Sports Minister will be hoping to clinch the gold medal that Malaysia took home in the 2007 SEA Games. His polo career is extensive and his performance in the Malaysian Open earlier this year sealed his place on the KL2017 squad. The Minister was accorded no privileges in qualifying for the team, undergoing a strict selection process like all players. Polo Team Manager, Datuk Mohamad Zekri Ibrahim, believes team morale will be enhanced by the Minister, hopefully helping them secure a top podium spot.
