Olympic Summit

Kuala Lumpur is aflutter with excitement this month as it prepares to receive the distinguished members of
the International Olympic Committee (IOC) who are gathering here for their 128th IOC session which will take place at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from 31 July-3 August.
This is the first time Malaysia has the honour of hosting an IOC Session, and it is largely due to the tenacity of Tunku Imran Tuanku Ja’afar, an IOC member and president of the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM).
The IOC is the supreme authority of the Olympic Movement and it is the most influential sports organisation in the world in connection with multisport Games, with ownership of the Olympic Games, the Olympic Winter Games and the Olympic Youth Games.
IOC President, Thomas Bach, and members, including prominent heads of state and royalty, such as HRH Princess Anne, the Princess Royal of Great Britain, HRH Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, Prince Albert of Monaco and HH Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani of Qatar, and prominent sports personalities will all be arriving in Kuala Lumpur for this gathering.
The highlight of the Session will be the selection of the host city for the 2022 Winter Olympics, which is between Almaty, Kazakhstan and Beijing, China. Also, on the cards is the selection of the host city for the 2020 Youth Olympic Games, which will see Brasov, Romania, vying for the honour against Lausanne, Switzerland.
More than 1,500 people from all over the world are expected to arrive in Malaysia for the event. In addition to the IOC members, there will be sizeable entourages from the candidate cities who are up for election, as well as representatives of the international media.
While there will be a busy agenda for the IOC members, their partners and guests will have an interesting programme
too. This includes a day-trip to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Malacca, which will be organised by Tunku Imran’s wife Che’ Engku Puan Sri Mahirah Abdullah.
VisionKL bids a warm welcome to all IOC members and guests, and wishes them a fruitful round of discussions as well as an enjoyable stay in the country. We hope delegates will take some time out from their hectic schedules to savour the many delights and attractions that Kuala Lumpur has to offer.
