All-New Honda CR-V Launched

12 July 2017:
Honda Malaysia unveils the 5th generation of its midsize SUV

The all-new Honda CR-V has had its presence in Malaysia officiated in a launch ceremony, a few weeks after it was first previewed in roadshows across the country along with booking forms.

The CR-V is one of many fresh Honda models to be imbued with the brand’s new suite of cutting-edge tech, as mentioned by Honda Malaysia Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Mr. Katsuto Hayashi in his speech during the launch; “The 5th Generation CR-V is equipped with three key Advanced Technologies, the 1.5L VTEC Turbocharged Engine, Honda SENSING and advanced features such as a programmable Power Tailgate.

“We believe this focused transition will lead us to make  ‘Tomorrows Dream, Today’s Reality’. We are also proud to note that Malaysia is the first country in  ASEAN that is introducing Honda SENSING, the Next Generation Advanced Safety Technology in  the All-New CR-V.”

The car comes in four variants sporting either a 1.5L turbocharged engine or 2.0L naturally aspirated engine, and is priced between RM142,400 and 167,700 without insurance.

Read on for a summary of the important bits of Honda’s contender for the mid-size SUV crown.

Under the bonnet
The Malaysian market CR-V comes in two engine flavours – a 1.5L VTEC Turbocharged unit (Premium 2WD, 2WD and 4WD) and A 2.0L NA i-VTEC 2WD engine that is carried over from the previous CR-V.

The 1.5L unit pumps out an admirable 193PS and 243NM, while the latter, an older powerplant, develops 154PS and 189Nm. These engines are coupled to a Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT), with paddle shifts available in all variants. As an added bonus, the CR-V meets the criteria set for an Energy Efficient Vehicle (EEV).

All sized up
The external measurements come in at 4,584mm in length, 1,855 mm in width and 1,679 mm (2WD) or 1,689 mm (4WD) in height, with a wheelbase of 2,660 mm. The ground clearance is a healthy 198 mm (2WD) or 208 mm (4WD). The CR-V weighs in between 1,520 kg for the 2.0L and just shy of 1,600kg for the Turbocharged 4WD.

On the outside
It’s an LED-everywhere affair as far as the external lighting is concerned, including LED headlights, front fog lights, daytime running lights and rear light clusters. The overall look is a natural evolution over its predecessor; it is unmistakably a Honda from every angle. The styling updates make it really easy on the eyes, while the tailgate spoiler, twin tailpipes, dark skirting all around and dual-tone alloy wheels lend the CR-V some visual flair.

The CR-V can be had in five colours. The Dark Olive Metallic is a new colour for a Honda vehicle, while the White Orchid Pearl and Obsidian Blue Pearl are new shades for the CR-V. Lunar Silver Metallic and Modern Steel Metallic have are from the previous generation model.

Interior inspection
Honda’s “Man Maximum, Machine Minimum” concept is evident once you open the doors and notice that there is plenty of space for both occupants and goods. For instance, rear legroom is now 90mm greater than before. Since Honda seems to have given the rear seats yoga lessons, looking at how flexibly they can position themselves, cargo space can be increased to a maximum of 1,084 litres. This cavernous storage area can be accessed with a touch thanks to the Programmable Power Tailgate, a first for Honda Malaysia.

Delightful features also add to the appeal of the 7-seat cabin, with a 7″ Advanced Display Audio that is Apple CarPIay and Android Auto ready, providing seamless smart connectivity and entertainment. Dual-zone air-conditioning ensures the comfort of front and rear passengers of the CR-V are taken care of, as they sit back in combi-leather seats (with an  8-Way Power Seat for driver and 4-Way Power Seat for front passenger). HDMI and USB ports are available too.

Honda SENSING and safety
According to Honda, Honda SENSING is the “next generation advanced safety technology” as a safety net to assist drivers if they encounter dangerous driving conditions. But, what is it exactly?

Essentially, it consists of three categories of safety suites that comprise seven features:
   (a) Driver Cruising Aid
        1. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
        2. Low-Speed Follow (LSF)
   (b) Frontal Collision Deterrence
        3. Forward Collision Warning (FCW)
        4. Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS)
   (c) Side Collision Deterrence
        5. Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
        6. Road Departure Mitigation (RDM)
        7. Lane Keep Assist System (LKAS)

In addition to primary active safety provided by Honda SENSING, the CR-V is also available with a collection of passive and other supportive safety features. These include six airbags, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) with Agile Handling Assist (AHA), Hill Start Assist (HSA), Emergency Stop Signal (ESS), Electronic  Brake Distribution (EBD), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), and Multi-Angle Rearview Camera. The car also comes with a Driver Attention Monitor to help fatigued drivers stay vigilant via a combination of alerts and steering vibrations.

Depending on which variant you are looking at, there are other new appointments as well such as a Walk Away Auto Lock.  High-end features include Honda LaneWatch Camera, Auto High Beam and Active Cornering Light.
