Ladies, it’s time to grab those running shoes and start training as the fifth edition of the Malaysia Women Marathon (MWM) is just around the corner. Launched in 2013, the event has been growing in size and stature each year, drawing thousands of eager runners to what has become one of THE road races of the year. And by the way – the race is open to men as well!

Since its inception, the MWM has seen women who entered the race in the 10km category progress to the 21km and even the full 42km distance, gaining the confidence and courage to run the longer distances through the various running clinics and workshops held in the run up to the race. They also gain support and encouragement from fellow women runners and have built many lasting friendships through the MWM.
This year the race has added new categories to include children and men. Children aged 6 to 9 years old (Group 1) and 10 to 12 years old (Group 2) will be running the distance of 2.5km with guides, while the 13 to 15 year olds can test their mettle on the 5km run.

To make this year’s race even more memorable, Her Royal Highness, DYMM Tengku Permaisuri Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin will be joining in for the 5KM fun run flag-off session.
“We are very honoured to have our queen present during the flag-off with all the women. It really lifts our spirits and gives us the encouragement. It also shows us that Selangor truly supports women not only in marathons but overall,” said MWM Race Director, Karen Loh.

To add incentive, this year’s race includes a raft of new prizes from running gear to pre-paid international marathon slots and plenty more. Meanwhile, on the race day itself, those that are hungry after crossing the finishing line can replenish energy levels at the many food trucks within the Race Village at the Shah Alam Stadium where the race begins and ends.
Race kit collection begins on 3 March while an expo with talks and other activities will take place at the Acappella Suite Hotel, Shah Alam, in the two days leading up to the race on 5 March. Some of the highlights on 4 March include a women’s forum on gender equality, female pacer meet and greets, yoga clinics, makeovers and more.

Speaking at the recent launch event, Chairman Standing Committee Tourism, Consumer Affairs & Environment Of Selangor, YB Puan Elizabeth Wong – a runner herself who has participated in previous MWMs said: “We totally support this event, in fact it is one of our main events on our calendar for Selangor. It is especially encouraging when you hear the feedback we receive from the runners and women who have participated in the race asking us to continue this event and improve it for the following year. It brings good coverage abroad and also many international runners have joined in recent years, proof that MWM is gaining much international recognition.”
Seeing its potential, Tourism Selangor has also backed the MWM since the beginning: “We are very pleased that MWM has chosen to continue its event here in Selangor. We hope that it will continue to do so as it brings women from all over the country and many from overseas,” said Puan Noorul Ashikin Mohd Din, Tourism Selangor General Manager.
