Made in Malaysia

Malaysia is the shopping capital of the world and is starting to make a name for itself both regionally and internationally as a hotbed for emerging designer talent.

Variety is the spice of life for Silas Liew

When talking about Malaysian designers, you can’t look past the diminutive footwear visionary worshipped by socialites everywhere – Dato’ Jimmy Choo.

Ever since he got a pair of his sexy heels onto Princess Diana, his name has shot into the pantheon of shoe gods.

Now that you’re in his hometown, search for his creations and put some style in your strut.

First up is Royal Designer Radzuan Radziwill, who recently opened a store in Paris and showcased his most recent collection in front of the world’s elite at Paris Fashion Week in September 2014.

There’s no need to travel to Paris to own one of his gorgeous creations though – check out his store in the city centre and get ahead of the curve.

Next up, Melinda Looi has done it better than anyone else in the city for longer. Having won Designer of the Year three times and seen her work showcased on five continents, she is the real deal.

Her three distinct brands – Melinda Looi Couture, Melinda Looi Prêt-à-Porter and MELL – each feature a slightly different slant on her creations but all with that trademark class.

Check out her new sub-line, MELL BASICS, for pieces made entirely from organic cotton.

Lastly, we look onwards to the future. Silas Liew recently blew the competition out of the water at KL Fashion Week and is on the fast track to success. His 2014 Raya collection boasted vibrant colours and prints to dramatic effect. Keep an eye out for his understated yet stunning pieces on a runway near you soon.

Of course this is just the tip of the iceberg as there are many other inspirational and talented designers we haven’t mentioned, but we wouldn’t want to spoil your journey of discovery as that’s half the fun. Happy hunting!
