An ancient proverb reads, ‘what soap is to the body, laughter is to the soul’ and if that statement holds true, then KLites will soon have a squeaky-clean psyche. As the capital teems with world class comedy acts this month, the whole city prepares to giggle away the month of April.
Almost Famous: Russell Peters
With record-breaking sales figures for international shows, a Gemini Award for his stellar hosting of the 2008 Juno Awards, and a third place ranking on Forbes’ topearning comedians of 2013 list, you’d think that Russell Peters has finally made it big.
According to him, well… not quite.
“That’s why this new tour is called Almost Famous,” Peters told the Los Angeles Times in a 2014 interview. “Most comics are never lucky enough to do one arena tour – maybe Dane Cook, Kevin Hart or Chris Rock if he wanted to. I’m on my fourth arena tour. So what do I have to do to get on The Howard Stern Show?”
Despite his words, Peters’ star status is in no doubt in Malaysia, with his first show here in 2012 selling out almost immediately and a second added due to overwhelming demand, as he went on to perform to 16,000 fans over the two days.
For his second two-day visit on 10 and 11 April, expect all new material as the Canadian funnyman delivers his trademark blend of observational comedy that highlights his opinions on stereotypes, jobs, cell phone usage and dating. Though race and cultural contrasts are often considered a taboo subject in many countries, Peters is renowned for his hilarious yet resonant commentary on stereotypes and differences.
Amusing impersonations and lightning-fast improv complete an entertaining package that Malaysia is eager to welcome back – a sentiment shared by Peters. “I had a great time in KL in 2012, so I’m pretty pumped about coming back and seeing ‘uolls’ in April lah!” he declared. Also returning to Malaysia is ‘Fastest Hands in New York’ DJ Spinbad, who performed for Peters’ Notorious World Tour 2012 and will do so again this year, along with an opening act before the comedian himself takes the stage.
As Peters would say, “Be a man! Do the right thing!” and get yourself to Stadium Malawati, Shah Alam on one of the two dates this April to enjoy a side-splitting spectacle that is guaranteed to bring the house down!

PJ Laugh Fest
Peters is not the only hilarious highlight of this busy month as the annual extravaganza PJ Laugh Fest returns to our shores to keep us giggling right the way through til May. That’s right, the city is getting its annual dunk into the dangerously hilarious, comedy-infested waters.
It wouldn’t be a laugh fest without a solid contingent of stage comics punctuating the month, each bringing a different vibe to proceedings. The comedy riot is led by the grumpy, grouchy and cantankerous Kavin Jay. Known for his rapid-fire delivery, Jay has become a force to be reckoned with on the comedy circuit. Catch him waxing lyrical on the funny side of fatherhood in the 21st century.
Jay will also be starring in a show with sidekicks Rizal Van Geyzel, Jonathan Atherton and Shankar Santhiram later in the month – a group guaranteed to have you in stitches. From KL to Jakarta and Indo boys Mo Sidik, Randhika Jamil, MC Danny, Isman HS and Reno Fenady are set to give Malaysian audiences a taste of heady comedy from the islands. Last, but not least, don’t miss Young, Wild & Funny with comedians Gajen, Prakash, Brian and Keren, moguls of Malaysian stand up.
Making its second appearance in the festival is the inimitable Faulty Towers Dining Experience, back by overwhelmingly popular demand. Fans of the perennial 1970s BBC comedy starring John Cleese should under no circumstances miss this ‘immersion’ theatre which combines comedy and dining to savagely funny effect.

The loosely scripted, madcap improvisational performance art takes diners back through time to some of the juiciest moments of the series, while you get served by the three hoteliers. Just don’t mention the war.
Tickle your fancy?
With all this top-notch hilarity heading to Malaysia’s capital, be sure to catch Russell Peters and the PJ Laugh Fest for some elite comic relief. It’s guaranteed to have you in tears of laughter.
