Laugh It Up At These Comedy Showcases

Should your aspirations for 2018 include healthy doses of laughter, get off to a flying start with gut-busting stand-up shows this month! Among the many performances slated to be staged across the city are two titans of comedy from India who have booked plane tickets to KL this January, and a local doyenne of laughter who is no stranger to Malaysians.

There is no doubt many hands will be put together for Aravind SA, Kenny Sebastian and Joanne Kam.

Aravind SA

Looking at how popular this comic genius is now, you’d never guess that he’s only been in the business for a handful of years. He studied film-making and become an assistant director upon graduating – a job he eventually gave up to pursue stand-up.

The Chennai-born Aravind soon found overnight fame as he made a connection with his audience, using his unadulterated lingo and selfdeprecating humour to great effect. On top of these personal takes, he often mixes in cultural ones that speak to the crowd, evident in Madrasi Da, his first major solo stand-up success which made it to Amazon Prime as a special.

With over 150 sold-out shows across the world already under his belt, be sure to catch him when he steps into the light at PJ Live Arts this 6 January with Bhargav Ramakrishnan and Prakash Daniel!

Kenny Sebastian

Having spent his childhood in various cities across India, Kenny Sebastian accumulated quite the set of life experiences growing up, which spurred him to stretch for heights beyond what his average contemporaries would reach for. He donned a filmmaker’s hat at the age of 15, and within half a dozen years he had written and directed 12 short films.

He was even involved in two Indian movies – Station and Joint Trip – and produced his own acoustic blues album, Balance. It’s safe to say that he’s a man of many talents, and he is a particularly gifted comedian. Kenny has appeared before a packed audience more than 500 times, touring across India and the world on the regular. He has written and hosted The Living Room on Comedy Central, as well as other online specials including the first sci-fi comedy web series in India.

Clear your schedule on 19 or 20 January to watch him live at klpac!

Joanne Kam

An introduction is barely needed for Joanne Kam on her own turf, for she has made her mark here over the past two decades entertaining audiences with her wit and antics on stage. She has even been hailed as Malaysia’s Queen of Comedy by many, who love her cheeky banter to a man.

Nothing is too sacred for this funny lady who regularly pokes fun at herself and her life adventures in her performances, which are often laced with amusing local colloquialisms. Joanne’s flamboyant style also manifests itself in her ensemble, as she flaunts elegant dresses, flashy costumes and everything in between in her appearances.

She promises all-new material in her LA LA LIAN – A One Woman Comedy Special show, and pulls the curtains back on her personal life as she details her experiences from childhood to her days as a comedy star.

Expect everything from cheesy one-liners to more sober accounts as she reveals all. Joanne will be strutting her stuff at PJ Live Arts on 26 and 27 January, so don’t miss this chance to be tickled pink!
