Island Arts In Penang

Home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of George Town, Penang is known for its rich and diverse culture, with an arts scene to match. This month brings a back-to-back, 10-day, three-festival extravaganza, celebrating those scenes as well as the wonders of literature and music.

George Town Literary Festival

The largest event of its kind in Malaysia, the George Town Literary Festival sees exciting dialogues on critical topics, panel discussions, a poetry marathon, book launches and workshops with local and international writers.

Don’t miss out on remarkable personalities like Malaysian poet A. Samad Said, political cartoonist Zunar, Indonesian poet and food writer Laksmi Pamuntjak, Dutch journalist Caroline de Gruyter and many more who will be speaking at the festival. Other activities include a free screening of Penang Hokkien film, You Mean The World To Me, dance performances and a pop-up market that showcases artisanal goods and local cuisine.

In-between Arts Festival 2017

The In-Between Arts Festival reflects the diversity of culture and religion in Penang with its list of inspiring events and activities. Held in the cultural quarter of the Armenian Park, the festival is free and attracts local and international tourists interested to learn about the island’s culture and traditional practices.

Among the events are dance performances and time-honoured games as well as a market with local handicrafts and yummy delights.

Penang Island Jazz Festival

Malaysia’s longest-running annual jazz festival is back for a 14th year, attracting jazz music lovers around the region. Get ready to get jazzy with an array of musical happenings at various venues.

The Jazz By The Beach main stage programme during the last two days will be a highlight, with Italian fingerstyle guitarist Peppino D’Agostino, creative jazz drummer Eva Klesse and her Quartet, Modern Pansori from Korea, Penang’s Tonal Alchemy and other talented musicians. The festival also has an exhibition and several other performances at venues around George Town.
