Who would have thought that when 10-
year-old Kenny Gorelick picked up a
saxaphone, he would forever be linked to
the iconic instrument? By fourth grade,
Kenny G was the best sax player in his school. Now two
decades later, as one of the most well-known sax players
in the world he gave us a taste of his alluring music
at the Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands, on 26 April.
It was a night of Latin ardour as Kenny G serenaded
us with love songs from his latest album, ‘Rhythm and
Romance’. The artiste, whose music is taking a new
Latin-infused direction, incorporated rhythms and styles
such as samba, salsa and bossa nova into his repertoire,
with songs like ‘Sax-o-Loco’ and ‘Salsa Kenny’.
Kenny is indeed very comfortable with the change,
stating in his website, “I’m taking my music out of the
elevator and south of the border.” Indeed, with his 2008
tour, he’s crossing more borders than ever.
It has been 17 years since Kenny’s first well-received
performance in Malaysia. “I am definitely very excited
to be in Malaysia again, as my music is very much
appreciated here,” says the award-winning Kenny G. “I
would definitely award KL as one of the world’s most
vibrant cities.”
The passionate musician with his signature locks has
long been praised for his extraordinary performances
both onstage and in the recording studio. The 51-yearold
sax maestro is continually reinventing himself, and
is definitely not resting on his laurels even with global
album sales totalling over 75 million records–and still
rising! Besides ‘Rhythm and Romance’, Kenny G’s other
must-have albums include his breakthrough 1986 fourth
album ‘Duotones’, the 1992 Grammy-winning and alltime
best-selling instrumental album ‘Breathless’, and
1994’s ‘Miracles: The Holiday Album’. |
