The Great Outdoors: Explore What Nature Has To Offer In East Malaysia

If you happened to be travelling to East Malaysia this month, you’re in luck as a number of exciting events light up the land. There’s something for everyone, whether you’re fitness freak looking to scale a mountain or bird lover out to spot a rare species. Read on to see what’s on the cards!

Sarawak Adventure Challenge – The Lost Mines

Taking place in Western Borneo this year, this exciting multi-sport event immerses participants in the beauty of the rainforest, rivers and caves of the area.

Outdoor enthusiasts taking part in this challenge will be taking on a 55km route that is a combination of cross-country mountain biking, trail running and caving. The route winds around Bau, a gold mining town during the 1840s, and criss-crosses through tribal villages and abandoned mining sites.

30th Mount Kinabalu International Climbathon

The Mount Kinabalu Climbathon was first organised by Sabah Parks in 1987 with the intention of creating a rapid rescue squad to help injured climbers and bring them down safely and swiftly. The Climbathon was eventually taken over by the Sabah tourism board in 1995 when it saw the potential of the event in attracting more tourists.

Only 120 elite runners are allowed to participate by invitation in the 26km summit race category; they will be gunning it to Low’s Peak (the summit) with a height of 4095.2m. With the popularity of the event having increased significantly over the years, the climbathon will be held biennially from this year onwards.

Borneo Bird Festival

If you are a bird enthusiast, make sure to reach the annual Borneo Bird Festival! Sabah, known for its array of flora and fauna, is home to various species of resident and migratory birds. There are 688 such species and 60 of these endemic to Borneo.

Held in the West coast of Sabah, the ninth edition of the Festival aims to create public awareness on environmental conservation, while promoting birdwatching and eco-tourism activities. The three-day programme is packed with activities like nature and wildlife talks, booth exhibitions, demonstrations of birding and photography contests. There will even be guided birding walks on Tanjung Aru beach and the Sabah Bird Race at the Crocker Range Park.
