When you can take to the stage in any country and make audiences laugh their socks off without a word spoken, you’ve got a winning formula. The silent slapstick duo of Gamarjobat, comprising Ketch! and HIRO-PON, and their brand of comedy transcends language and age groups altogether.
Coming across like a live cartoon, the high-energy pair have taken physical comedy to new heights over the past decade, perfecting the art of the mime with zany sketches and impossibly hilarious situations. Their highly polished routine gets the audience involved as well, with such precision and synchronisation that it leaves you pondering how on earth they pull it off.
It doesn’t really matter what kind of theatre you’re into, you’ll find yourself giggling like a little kid at the antics these two get up to on stage. Time-honoured mime routines like the heavy suitcase, and the invisible escalator behind the table, are given a new lease of life, blowing any preconceived notions you may or may not have had about mime right out of the water.
Favourites at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the duo have also been known to perform longer narrative pieces (without words of course!), conveying moments of tenderness with over-emotive facial expressions and vocal stylings. They really know how to get across a point with precision movements. It’s endearing stuff, and nothing short of brilliant.
A delight to watch from start to finish for any age group, Gamarjobat (that’s ‘hello’ in Georgian) are bags of fun and ridiculously talented. Don’t miss the mohawked boys doing their thing!
