Football is Great at Avenue K

Peter Barnes, HE Vicki Treadall and Sue Wang unveil the Barclays Premier League trophy

The Barclays Premier League trophy is now on display among other football showpieces as part of the Football is Great campaign at Avenue K.

The six-week campaign, running from 19 March to 1 May, has been set up by the British High Commission and VisitBritain to combine the best the UK has to offer – football and tourism.

HE Vicki Treadall, British High Commissioner to Malaysia said: “Britain has an amazing offer from our heritage and culture to our fantastic food, fashion, shopping and beautiful cars.

“British and Malaysian people share a passion for football and promoting our countries through tourism. I believe this campaign will be a hit in Malaysia.”

Also in attendance at the official launch of the campaign was former Manchester City and England legend, and current Malaysian TV pundit, Peter Barnes.

As well as the Premier League trophy, several artefacts from the National Football Museum in Manchester, England are on display in the Avenue K ground floor lobby. These include the match ball from England and Argentina’s quarter final match at the 2002 World Cup, a waxwork of Brazilian legend Pele, and a replica of the FA Cup.

With the Premier League standing as the most popular football league in the world today, it is considered one of the UK’s greatest exports. Malaysians have a particular affinity with the competition and now that British Airways has announced that daily direct flights will operate between Kuala Lumpur and London starting in May, the number of Malaysians attending Premier League games, and the UK in general, is expected to continue to rise.
