ASEAN Media Bloggers Tourism Hunt Takes Off

The hunt is on as participants embark on a tourism trail through Malaysia.

Beginning their journey at the Malaysia Tourism Information Centre in the heart of Kuala Lumpur this morning, some 50 prominent media and bloggers from 10 ASEAN countries took off on the second edition of Tourism Malaysia’s ASEAN Media Bloggers Tourism Hunt.

Launched last year, the initiative aims to introduce and promote Malaysia’s unique cultural, heritage, culinary and other tourist offerings, and is formatted as a treasure hunt, race and social media contest. Bloggers are able to provide first-hand information of their journey via videos and photos on platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, helping to promote the nation through mass social media marketing.

Themed ‘Malaysia on Wheels’, the four-day adventure will take them around Malaysia, visiting iconic landmarks in various states. Merdeka Square and Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor respectively kick off the itinerary, before the group heads north to Ipoh and Kuala Kangsar in Perak.

Aside of being some of the first to visit the newly opened Movie Animations Park Studio (MAPS) in Ipoh, participants will have a chance to experience an authentic local lifestyle at a traditional homestay where they will learn to fish and tap rubber.

From Perak, they head south to Putrajaya to explore the administrative capital before drawing their journey to an end. A plethora of local culinary delights will be had along the way, including stops at famous outlets such as Sate Kajang Haji Samuri and Pakeeza Restaurant.

The ASEAN market remains the largest contributor of tourist arrivals to Malaysia with a total of tourist arrivals to Malaysia. In 2016, a total of 20.3 million tourists from ASEAN countries visited  Malaysia, constituting 75.8% of the country’s total arrivals of 26.8 million.

Malaysia’s goal of attracting 23.1 million ASEAN tourists in 2017 is already well on its way with 5.03 million having already arrived in the first quarter of the year.

With 2017 being the Visit ASEAN@50: Golden Celebration Year, or the 50th anniversary of ASEAN, Malaysia will be hosting the 29th SEA Games from 19-30 August and the 9th ASEAN Para Games from 17-23 September, both to be held in KL and around the country. These milestone events, along with new attractions including the Movie Animation Park Studios and Genting Highlands Premium Outlet, are expected to pull more ASEAN tourists to Malaysia.
