Jivani Jeyasingam finds a new world of shopping pleasure at Kenanga Wholesale City’s Chinese New Year launch

“Happy Chinese New Year and welcome to Kenanga Wholesale City shopping mall!” This was the greeting by the emcee as I entered the makeshift catwalk area, and it jolted me from my post-lunch drowsiness. Now alert, I looked around at the getting-busier-by-the-minute scene, excited that the new mall’s preview of its Chinese New Year delights would include a fashion show. Fitting, really, for a retail outlet that specialises in all things fashion.

Shoppers actually stopped their shopping to watch the fashion show |
Since it was my first time at Kenanga, I hadn’t known what to expect. Would the clothes all be sold in bulk? Would it all be outdated fashion? Would it be really expensive? I soon got myself up-to-date – and how! As the parking was all the way up top, I had to make my way down nine floors to get to the event area, and this gave me plenty of opportunity to check out what the place had to offer. And let me tell you, I was in shopping heaven! Over 800 shops of clothes, shoes, bags and accessories everywhere I turned, and loads of discounts!

And for their Chinese New Year promotion, there was more red on the catwalk at Kenanga Wholesale City than I had ever seen in one place. One after another, the models came dressed in the best from the featured outlets, including traditional Chinese designs from Gu Zhi Qi Yuan, casual men’s wear from We 2 and West Mill, country style fashion from Yan’s Creation and trendy children’s fashion from Fine Star Trading. My favourite part of the fashion show was when the kids took to the runway. They were accompanied by the male models and they looked adorable! Some were shy and had to be picked up by the models, while some were friendly and kept waving to random people in the crowd.

This special preview certainly had everyone excited for more. Most of the shoppers even stopped what they were doing to watch the show. In fact, starting from now till 6 February, shoppers and visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy the many activities planned by Kenanga Wholesale City, such as weekly fashion shows, celebrity appearances, cultural and acrobatic performances and lion dances, to get shoppers and visitors in the mood to welcome a fresh and blooming Chinese New Year.

Yee sang time for guests and media!
The fashion show was followed by a lou sang for the guests and members of the media. At each corner of the stage was a big plate of yee sang and everyone gathered around to toss the bits of raw fish and shredded vegetables with the sauce and condiments. It’s a toss for prosperity, and indeed I knew what I wanted prosperity for: More money to shop at this wonderful new retail paradise!
