Experience Chinese New Year five ways with the brand's five malls!

With five successful malls under its belt now, Sunway Malls is holding unique Lunar New Year celebrations across its retail range to usher in the Year of the Rooster, showcasing different themes to capture the varying markets they cater to.

“Each mall has its own uniqueness and we are not taking that away from them. There are different strategies to running a group of malls and for us, we want each mall to run on their own creative approaches and retain their individualistic qualities that allows them to attract and adapt to their catchments,” says HC Chan, Chief Executive Officer of Sunway Malls and Theme Parks.

Sunway Velocity Mall's Main Atrium looks resplendent for the Chinese New Year

The group’s latest offering, Sunway Velocity Mall, sports a “Winds of Prosperity” theme for the Lunar New Year. Decorated with colourful hand fans designed with traditional Chinese motifs, the décor represents movement and fluidity, symbolising the fanning of prosperity and fortune to the surrounding area of Cheras. Speaking of decorations, those looking to spruce up their homes can stop by the elaborate flower market and pick from a wide range of floral beauties, including orchids, pussy willow, lucky bamboo, bonsai, succulents, cacti and chrysanthemums.

With a raft of activities to secure their attention, kids aren't left out at Sunway Velocity Mall

To further add to the festive atmosphere, the God of Fortune will be travelling through the mall every weekend, gifting shoppers in his path with angpow packets with surprise gifts. A Golden Rooster ticket will be hidden in some of the angpows and the lucky ones to get it will win SK Jewellery’s 999 Pure Gold Tsum Tsum Prosperity Coin Angpow. Also not to be missed are the acrobatic lion dances, heart-thumping 12-ensemble drum performances, amazing mask-changing acts, fun Chinese Yo-Yo stunts, as well as resounding performances by the Yamaha orchestra. There will also be free children’s workshops happening every weekend, where kids will have a fun time exploring their creativity through oriental craft classes and activities.

The LG2 Orange Concourse at Sunway Pyramid Mall has been turned into a retro Chinese city

A cheeky Cantonese phrase is used to usher in the New Year at perennially-popular Sunway Pyramid – “Mai Zao Gai” (咪走鸡), which means, “Do not let great bargains or opportunities run away.” The décor is inspired by the streets of 1970s Hong Kong, and the LG2 Orange Concourse is decorated four storeys high with structures of shops and a theatre that harks back to yesteryears. A giant 14-foot rooster is placed on the rooftop whilst shoppers can snap pictures with its 8-foot sibling on the ground.

At Sunway Pyramid mall, you can't go wrong guessing which zodiac animal takes its turn this Chinese New Year!

There is also a complimentary photo booth featuring a traditional Chinese medicine store. Hanging red lanterns adorn the entire Concourse, along with stalls selling traditional candies, calligraphy services, customised stamps and traditional costumes. Shoppers can also enjoy lion dance performances on certain weekends and rejoice in the joy of spring amidst the beautiful blossoms at the Spring Flower Market located at the LG2 Blue Concourse.

The mall’s friendly mascot, Leo the Lion, will be dressed up in his Fortune Rooster outfit and those who catch him will get to enjoy exclusive discounts at participating stores during the Rush Hour promotions. This signifies a sweet beginning that comes with the hopes and blessings that the rest of the year will be smooth and prosperous for all.

The charm of bygone Shanghai has been resurrected at Sunway Putra Mall

Also going back in time, Sunway Putra Mall’s décor is inspired by the ancient charm of the grand Shanghai Town. Themed ‘The Splendour of Spring’, the mall creates a rustic, yet exclusive setting that showcases a Shanghai town. Visitors will be awed by the amazing replicas of shop houses and theatre stage that was inspired by the East-meets-West era in the 1930s, oriental decorations and a wishing tree that stands tall at the Main Concourse, cleverly used to enhance the ambiance of that era.

Shoppers can also get acquainted with New Year essentials at their Chinese New Year bazaar and whilst going about festive shopping, they get to enjoy two hours of free parking with any spending in the mall. The merriment of Sunway Putra Mall includes the appearances of the God of Prosperity and Shanghai Lady on weekends as they make their rounds distributing prosperity goodies. There are also Chinese Paper Cutting Art workshops, traditional lion dance performances and more on weekends and public holidays.

Meanwhile, Sunway Giza is abuzz with weekend bazaars and a Lunar New Year fair. Activities such as a calligraphy contest, greeting card-making contest, God of Prosperity walkabout and lion dance performances hype up the festivities! Shoppers can browse through selections of cookies, hampers, clothes, festive décor for the home and more at the bazaar.

Over in Penang, Sunway Carnival Mall has set up a propitious fortune walk in the mall with various auspicious ornaments, in line with their theme “Jin Yu Man Tang” (金玉满堂), which means “May fortune be with you”. The Upper Ground Concourse is decorated with traditional Chinese architectural arches, lime trees, breaming red lanterns, gold coins, and a customised God of Prosperity sitting majestically in the heart of the Concourse to evoke good fortune.

Penangites can also enjoy single mask changing performances, Chinese orchestra, 3D paper-craft workshops, calligraphy demonstrations, stage magic and God of Prosperity walkabouts in the mall. Shoppers who spend RM188 and above (RM128 for HSBC cardholders) in two receipts will be rewarded with angpow packets whilst those who spend RM488 and above (RM388 for HSBC cardholders) in two receipts will receive an exclusive porcelain teapot set.

Extending a Helping Hand
Not forgetting to embark on an act of kindness this festive season, Sunway Malls is an advocate of charitable causes and encourages the malls and the community to give to those in need. For this Lunar New Year, the brand is focussing on old folks’ homes as it is a time for reunion and to celebrate with new personal belongings. This act of giving also symbolises filial piety to the elderly.

Sunway Malls has pledged to give away 15,000 items to various old folks’ homes with every redemption made by shoppers. The items such as toiletries, towels, bags, first aid kit, non-perishable food and more will be packed into festive gift packs to be given away to each of the old folks. The redemptions are available at Sunway Pyramid, Sunway Putra Mall and Sunway Velocity Mall during the festive campaign period.

With every spend of RM300 (RM200 for HSBC cardholders) in two receipts, shoppers will be able to redeem a packet of All Season Prosperity Angpow, and those who spend RM700 (RM600 for HSBC cardholders) in three receipts will be eligible to redeem a Fortune Rooster plush toy. As the two newest malls, Sunway Velocity Mall has an additional redemption tier where shoppers who spend more than RM3,000 (RM2,800 for HSBC cardholders) in five receipts will receive a limited edition ‘Winds of Prosperity’ 999 Pure Gold Coin, whereas shoppers at Sunway Putra Mall can redeem an exquisite Gold Pendant by spending RM1,800 (RM1,600 for HSBC cardholders & Sunway Pals Members) in five receipts.
