The groundbreaking ceremony for the River of Life Project promises greener days ahead
Are you missing the good old days when you and the whole family could just leave your worries behind and pack for a picnic in the serenity of the outdoors? Well, now with the River of Life Project on the way, it won’t be long until you and your loved ones will be enjoying nature by the Klang River.
Launched on the first of July by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Razak, the River of Life Project aims to revitalise the Klang and Gombak rivers into a vibrant waterfront. The project will be divided into three components – river cleaning, river beautification and river development.
“I hope that once completed, people will be able to benefit from this project,” said the Prime Minister. He explains that the river would be cleaned to improve its current Class III – Class V water quality to a Class IIb, making it suitable for recreational use for everyone to enjoy.
With the River of Life Project, citizens are reminded of the importance of environmental consciousness as Dato’ Raja Nong Chik, Minister of Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing points out, “It is our hope that the River of Life Project will make a change in the mindset to create an environmentally friendly and sustainable living for the urban communities. It’s time we reminded ourselves to put our civic minded and responsibility hats on to keep our rivers clean and uncontaminated.”
Kuala Lumpur City Hall, the party that will be leading the project, has also scheduled seminars that will be happening on 4 and 5 July to educate the public and private organisations on the benefits of cleaning up the river, and an exhibition until 12 July to showcase what’s in store for the project. All this will be happening at Institut Latihan DBKL, Dewan Perdana Mestika, Cheras, KL.
KL is well on its way to an iconic waterway at par with some of the world’s greatest cities. So be prepared as the city injects some tranquillity, with the River of Life Project.
