Check out some of KL's best Poke Bowl purveyors!

We swear this has nothing to do with Pokemon! Originating from the island paradise of Hawaii, and quickly emerging as one of the biggest food trends today, poke bowls consist of marinated slices of raw fish served with a variety of fresh veggies and rice.

Poke is the Hawaiian word meaning ‘to cut,’ and these three bastions of healthy goodness should be at the top of your list when debating where to try a bowl.

The Fish Bowl Poke Shop

The Fish Bowl Poke Shop is the first outlet in Malaysia to offer the Polynesian specialty with a comprehensive menu of DIY options to create the bowl of your dreams. Choose a base like brown rice or baby greens and then top it up with vegetable sides that include onions, carrots, tomatoes, mango, and even pineapple.

For protein, there are locally inspired shoyu, sriracha and kaffir lime marinated salmon or tuna cubes. For those who can’t decide on a combination, there are six types of succulent fish-andrice options available. Try the founder’s favourite, the Shoyu Tuna or the Spicy Sriracha Salmon for a sizzling kick!

Eatomo Food Company

This California-inspired casual market -style kitchen serves up all kinds of fresh seafood goodies such as oysters, mussels and sashimi, but of course what we’re really interested in is its signature poke bowls.

One of the best items on the menu is the California poke, which is a mix of salmon and butterfish nestled on a bed of crab salad, avocado guacamole, cucumber salad, masago and spicy mayo. Other fish topping choices are the Spicy Salmon poke (a delectable combo of salmon + spicy toro mayo salmon) and the Spicy Tuna poke which isa blend of raw fatty tuna and spring onion.

Paperfish

The new kid on the poke block, Paperfish aims to promote a healthy lifestyle for all its patrons. It promises that its bowls use only the best ingredients and spices inspired by Malaysian flavours, while staying true to the originalHawaiian taste.

Pick between salmon, tuna and shrimp marinated with a myriad of flavourings such as shoyu, chili, sea-salt, and mango. Pair it with a base of white rice, brown rice, or quinoa and top it off with superfoods like chia seeds, flaxseeds, almonds and pomegranate seeds for a nutrient-bursting power meal!
